Pale Male, the famous Red Tail hawk,
made his home near Central Park.
In a documentary about him,
he watched from a distance,
in a wide urban meadow,
as one of his offspring,
who on a first flight flopped ground ward,
was assailed by a smaller bird.
The father stayed back,
with primal knowing that his child
had to get through it alone.
My daughter prepares to leave home now
and into her life and onto her path,
far away from me.
I miss her already,
as years became months,
months became weeks,
and weeks are soon to be days
until she goes.
Then the vast expanse of my void,
once filled with running, doing and helping her are done,
and I see what lies ahead,
as I find my way into my new world, too.
