Lift

By Ian Hochberg

The bitter wind swept across the writhing marble foam swells and scoured the flight deck from bow to stern of the great heaving flat top

The high whine of props and rumbling bass drone of grinding motors growled as the pilots forced down their brakes until it was time to launch off the carrier.

The laden torpedo bomber was ready to rip …. and with the flight captain’s flag drove into the daggering wind and off over the bow.

Looking forward from the stern, the plane disappeared as if it must have ditched and was about to be crushed and plowed under heel by the knifing bow.

Then it came into sight as it rose above the deck while it gained enough roaring momentum to push itself into airborne fighting trim.

… And this is the way I live forward into another day.
